Measuring to Transform: Knowledge as the Driving Force Behind More Sustainable Water Management
Sustainability is no longer measured solely by the commitments made, but by organizations’ ability to understand, manage, and improve their impact in an objective and verifiable manner. In a context marked by climate change, growing pressure on natural resources, and increased demands for transparency, having rigorous information has become an essential prerequisite for moving toward more resilient and sustainable management models.
For Aqualia, understanding environmental performance is a strategic tool that enables the company to transform data into decisions, identify opportunities for improvement, and anticipate future challenges. For this reason, the company promotes the assessment of impacts associated with the entire water cycle using internationally recognized scientific methodologies, which provide a comprehensive view of resource use, operational efficiency, and the relationship between its activities and the environment.
This approach stems from a clear conviction: you cannot manage what you do not measure. Assessing environmental footprints allows for a more precise understanding of how water services interact with ecosystems, where the main impacts occur, and what measures can be implemented to reduce them, optimize resources, and generate greater environmental value for communities.
Measurement, independent verification, and transparency are thus fundamental pillars of modern water management, aligned with international best practices and the expectations of citizens, public administrations, and investors.
The Case of Ronda and Badajoz (Spain)
The water services provided by Aqualia in Ronda and Badajoz have obtained AENOR certification in accordance with three internationally recognized methodologies for assessing environmental footprints: ISO 14046 (Water Footprint), ISO 14072 (Organizational Environmental Footprint), and the Water Footprint Network methodology (Water Footprint).
This recognition acknowledges the work done to rigorously measure, analyze, and verify the environmental impacts associated with service delivery, reinforcing Aqualia’s and the municipalities’ commitment to data-driven management, continuous improvement, and transparency. Because managing water sustainably begins with understanding and rigorously measuring its impact.
